Frequently Asked Questions

What does "carbon neutral" mean?

Becoming "carbon neutral" means that while we increase our efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have neutralized the climate impacts of our principal energy uses - office and data center energy use and air travel - so that these activities no longer make a net contribution to the dangers of climate change. We have accomplished this through the strategic purchase of carbon offset credits from Clean Air Cool Planet and NativeEnergy.

Why did salesforce.com commit to carbon offsetting?

We feel that it's our obligation as a global citizen to do our part and encourage members of our community to do the same.

How many tons of carbon has salesforce.com offset?

Our carbon offset for 2006 was nearly 19,700 tons. This was determined by measuring our Global Offices, Data Centers and Corporate Travel energy consumption.

Why is that important?

Carbon offsets can help renewable energy projects get built. Salesforce.com chose to purchase energy credits through Clean Air-Cool Planet and NativeEnergy because their unique approach to carbon offsetting fixes a market failure and directly finances new project construction and implementation. Our offsets purchase is providing a portion of the financial commitment that is funding the following projects:

  • 20% Native Wind -- Rosebud Sioux St. Francis Wind Farm
  • 20% Alaskan Native Village Wind -- Kasigluk Wind Farm
  • 20% Farmer-Owned Wind - NexGen Project
  • 20% Forest-Protection -- Conservation International Madagascar
  • 20% Farmer-Owned Methane -- Schrack Farm

What does this mean for me as a customer?

When you purchase salesforce.com you have chosen a more environmental solution, software as a service. Our company is committed to bringing down annual emissions and supporting renewable energy.

What can I expect to see from salesforce.com in the future?

Our community can expect an ongoing commitment to sustainability.

How can I get involved in efforts like this?

In addition to striving to reduce your personal emissions, becoming carbon neutral at the household level is one way to exercise this responsibility. Please visit www.nativeenergy.com or www.cleanair-coolplanet.org to take action. All offset credits will be retired by Clean Air-Cool Planet.
