January 17, 2006 A member of the training team in Colorado, Ashley Scott decided to make use of her volunteer hours by partaking in a United Planet cross cultural exchange program. She traveled to Ghana, West Africa for two weeks to teach English. United Planet is an international non-profit designed to foster cross cultural and geographical understanding; to broaden global perspectives; and to promote friendship, peace, and social and economic prosperity among cultures.” United Planet sends volunteers to several different countries and makes use of their skills in a variety of ways. Ashley taught English at a local secondary school where students are familiar with English but need help in understanding accent and nuances of the language. As a special treat, Ashley brought art supplies with her and wowed the kids with glitter! Ashley had a great trip to Ghana and looks forward to going back someday. She said about her experience “The people were amazing. They had an incredible sense of family and religion. Their optimism was unexpected, especially in the face of so much poverty. They were proud, but humble. Although I was stared at for my skin color (unusual in that area), everyone was very welcoming and interested in the “obroni” (white girl). I returned realizing how much I have taken for granted. This was a good reminder of how blessed we are.”
