The wetland wildflower
planting event in the Don River watershed
with Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation was great. There were
seven of us on Tuesday July 8th and we spent two hours planting shrubs in a
small meadow. The wet meadow we tended was created to provide desperately
needed habitat for amphibians in an area that is highly urbanized. The plants
helped to filter the water of impurities before it runs into the Don River.
The day was spent preserving the fragile ecoystem of the Don River Watershed. The weather was beautiful and we managed to plant quite a few shrubs - around 20 each! Claire, the volunteer coordinator, was really nice and she showed us what we needed to know to complete the activity. As one employee put it the best part of the day was "spending time with other SFDC employees and helping the community!". I would recommend this to other teams that want to 'get their hands dirty.'
