Habitat for Wildlife --- The Community Events Marketing Team rolled up their sleeves for a morning of hard labor to help build an enclosure to house
fostered wildlife in San Francisco. The enclosure was built in the backyard of a volunteer foster family living in the Sunset District of the city.
San Francisco Rescued Orphan Mammal Program (SF ROMP) provides specialized care to San Francisco's injured and orphaned wild mammals with the goal of returning a healthy animal back to the wild for independence. They are a community supported organization and rely on volunteers to help care for hundreds of wild animals needing assistance.
Armed with power drills and safety goggles, the five of us completed the structure in just over three hours. We began with the foundation, securing the floor of the cage. We were then tasked with assembling the walls made of wire mesh panels and installing the roof which turned out to be no small task. This required attaching several two-by-fours to be affixed to the structure to help fill in the gaps to ensure that the animals couldn't escape. The final task included decorating the cage to make it a suitable habitat for wild animals. This included hanging tree limbs from the ceiling and sides of the enclosure - securing them with rope.
It was a very rewarding and fun experience. It was wonderful to be outside and to see the end result of our efforts immediately. The foster parents have promised to send us pictures of the raccoons, skunks, squirrels and possums that find their way to their new home that we built.
